Sam Petrone (’07)


Sam Petrone, an outstanding soccer player, holds the Glen Rock High School record for scoring with 86 goals as well as 39 assists, and was named to the North Jersey All-Decade team for his substantial accomplishments.

Sam Petrone was a four-year starter who led the Panthers in scoring in each of his four
years. In 2003, as a ninth grader, Sam scored 14 goals and was awarded B-PSL-Carpenter Honorable Mention. As a sophomore, Sam scored 21 goals and led the 2004 soccer team to its first league championship in a decade. After the season, despite only being a sophomore, Sam was named to the First Team, Group 1, All-North Jersey and to the Second Team, All-County (by The Record).

As a junior, Sam scored 25 goals (despite missing five games and playing only a limited amount of time in several others due to an injury while playing with the USA Olympic Men’s Soccer Development Program.). His play led the team (now in Group 2) to a repeat League Championship and to reaching the Group 2, Sectional Championship Final. Sam was named to the First Team, All Group, All-North Jersey and to the First Team, All-County. 

As a senior and a captain, Sam scored 27 goals and led the Panthers to a third
consecutive League Championship. Sam was named to the First Team, All Group, All-North Jersey and to the First Team, All-County. He was also named Player of the Year in the B-PSL for a second year.

While playing soccer for Glen Rock High School, Sam participated in the USA Olympic Men’s Soccer Development Program (ODP), playing on numerous Regional All Star teams that competed in the United States and overseas.

In 2010, Sam was named to the North Jersey All-Decade team by The Record.

Sam attended Clemson University and then Seton Hall University, where he led
the latter team in scoring as a sophomore. He also played for the Red Bull U20
team and then the New Jersey Rangers in the USL Premier Development
League. In 2011, he signed with Mjallby AIF, a team then in Sweden’s highest
football league. After three years contracted to that team, in 2014, he returned to
the United States to play with the Rochester Rhinos.
