Alan Flynn

Alan Flynn (’65)

Alan Flynn was a leading athlete on Glen Rock High School’s football, basketball and track & field teams, and held long-standing school records in the 100 yard dash and 220 yard dash.

Alan Flynn was Co-Captain of the 1964 Football Team and was known as a wily and hard charging running back. He also played guard on the 1964-65 Basketball Team that won an NBIL Co-Championship and then had a memorable run in the Group 3, State Championship playoffs. In the Sectional semifinal, it defeated NNJIL Co-Champion Dwight Morrow (Englewood) High School in what was billed by The Bergen Record as the battle for the mythical Bergen County championship. Sadly, it was then defeated by Lincoln High School of Jersey City in the Group 3, Sectional Championship final.

In both of those sports, Alan used the speed that earned him significant acclaim with the track & field team. While his primary events were the 100 and 220 yard dashes, he also occasionally competed in the broad jump, high jump and discus. As a junior, Alan finished second in the 100 yard dash, fourth in the 220 yard dash and fourth in the broad jump at the 1964 NBIL Championship. As a senior, he finished third in the 100 yard dash and second in the 220 yard dash at the 1965 NBIL Championship. In the Group 3, Bergen County Championship, Alan finished third in the 100 yard dash and second in the 220 yard dash.

At the end of the season, Alan was awarded Honorable Mention, All-County (by The Bergen Record) in the 100 yard/220 yard dashes and was named to the First Team, All-Suburban (by The Ridgewood News) in the 220 yard dash. He graduated from Glen Rock with long-standing school records in the 100 yard dash (9.7 seconds) and in the 220 yard dash (21.9 seconds).
