Ed Troy was an extremely successful coach in multiple sports – with both boys teams and girls teams – and was one of the Glen Rock High School’s most outstanding teachers.

Ed Troy joined the Glen Rock High School science faculty in the 1960s and subsequently coached several teams, including being the Head Coach of the boys and girls track & field team(s) and an Assistant Coach of the boys soccer team for most of the 1970s. He was also the Head Coach of the field hockey team in the late 1970s.

In 1979, Ed was appointed Head Coach of the boys soccer team and led the 1979 team to a Group 1, Sectional Championship. After taking a year off, he returned to that position in 1981 and led the 1981 team to another Group 1, Sectional Championship. The 1981 team was also named Groups 1 & 2, Bergen County Team of the Year by The Bergen Record.

In 1984, Ed was appointed Head Coach of the girls soccer team. During the next seven years, under Ed’s helm, girls soccer blossomed into a magnificent program. Ed compiled an overall record of 131-19-7, a winning percentage of 86%. Four of his seven teams won league championships. Six of his seven teams won Group, Sectional Championships. Five of those six Sectional Champions won Group, North Jersey Championships and advanced to the Group, State Championship Final. Two of those five teams – the 1986 team and the 1987 team — were victorious in the Championship Final and crowned Group, State Champions; two others – the 1984 team and the 1989 team – ended that game in ties with their opponents and were crowned Group, Co-Champions.

During these years, The Bergen Record named three of those seven teams as the Groups 1 & 2 Team of the Year in Bergen County.

The 1984 team that won the Groups 1 & 2, State Championship was inducted into the Glen Rock High School Hall of Fame in the organization’s 2008 inaugural year and was the first girls team inducted into the Hall of Fame.

After the 1984 season, Ed was honored by the New Jersey Interscholastic (now Scholastic) Coaches Association and inducted into that organization’s Hall of Fame.  During his tenure as girls soccer coach, that organization also selected him as Section 1, Coach of the Year. After the 1987 season, The Ridgewood-News selected Ed as Coach of the Year. In 1997, Ed was inducted into the New Jersey Girls Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He has also been inducted into the Century Victory Club by the Bergen County Women Coaches Association.

During these years, Ed was also Head Coach of the girls track team and Head Coach of the cross-country team.In the 1990s, Ed continued to be a leader in Glen Rock High School athletics as an assistant coach.

Ed was a long-time member of the Executive Board of the Bergen County Coaches Association, including serving as President and other officer positions of the organization. In 1983, that organization gave him a Special Award for having made “an outstanding contribution to athletics in Bergen County.” More recently, he was acknowledged for giving over 25 years of service to that organization.

Ed taught at Glen Rock High School for 40 years, educating and guiding students from grade 6 through grade 12. His excellence as a teacher was recognized by his receiving the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and the 2002 Glen Rock Home and School Association Middle School Robert H. Ax Award.

Before coming to Glen Rock, Ed was a star athlete at Pope Pius XII High School in Passaic (NJ) and then attended and graduated from Montclair State College where he earned both a B.A. and M.A.in science.

In 2012, Ed was inducted into the Glen Rock High School Hall of Fame.
