Kari Reuter (’88)
Kari Reuter was a three sport star athlete (soccer, basketball and softball) who received multiple All-League, All-County and All-State honors.
Kari Reuter was a four year starter for Glen Rock High School’s girls soccer team and helped lead the team to four extremely successful seasons. A versatile and multitalented athlete, Kari usually played as a midfielder (where she was a leading goal scorer and a leading assist maker) but also played goalie when called upon to do so.
In her freshman year, Kari helped Glen Rock win the school’s first B-PSL championship in girls soccer and then defeat Mahwah to win the Division B (Groups 1 & 2) North Championship. Glen Rock then was tied by Delran in the Division B, State Championship game, resulting in it being crowned Division B, Co-Champions. In Kari’s sophomore year, Glen Rock repeated as B-PSL champion but, unfortunately, was defeated by Mahwah in the Group 1, North semifinal in a shootout that followed a scoreless tie between the two rival schools.
In Kari’s junior year, the 1986 team won the Group 1, Sectional Championship (in a 3-2 victory over Chatham Boro), the Group 1, North Jersey Championship (in a 1-0 victory over Mahwah) and then the Group 1, State Championship (in a 1-0 victory over Bordentown). At the end of the season, Kari was named to the Second Team, All-B-PSL.
In Kari’s senior year, she served as Co-Captain and helped the 1987 team successfully repeat as Group 1, Sectional Champion, as Group 1, North Jersey Champion and as Group 1, State Champion.
Kari was also a four year starter and two-year Co-Captain for the school’s basketball team. As a senior. Kari led the team to a Group 1, Sectional Championship. In that sectional championship game, Glen Rock displayed tenacious determination to defeat rival Waldwick. Down 25-12 at the half, they steadily battled back to tie the game in regulation and then won the game 49-47 in overtime. The team’s final record was 20-5 and Head Coach Sharon Iacono was named All-Suburban Coach of the Year.
Kari was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 13.4 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. She also blocked 2.1 shots per game. She was named to the Second Team, All-County (by The Bergen Record) and First Team, All-Suburban (by The Ridgewood News). She was later selected to play on the Bergen-Passaic Counties All-Star team and was the leading scorer in that team’s victory over the Jersey City All-Stars.
Kari was also a four year starter on the softball team. She was an excellent hitter, with a career batting average over .400. She also was an excellent first baseman. As a freshman, she was selected by The Ridgewood News as All-Suburban, Freshman of the Year. As a sophomore, she was selected by that paper as All-Suburban, Sophomore of the Year. She was also named to the Second Team, All-B-PSL Carpenter and received Honorable Mention, All-County. As a junior, she was named to the First Team, All-B-PSL Carpenter and the First Team, All-Suburban and received Honorable Mention, All-County. As a senior, Kari served as team Co-Captain and was named to the First Team, All-B-PSL Carpenter and to the Second Team, All-County.
In June 1988, the administration and coaches of Glen Rock High School recognized Kari as the top female athlete in that year’s graduating class and gave her the esteemed Athlete of the Year Award.
Kari was also Valedictorian of her class and earned academic awards in American History, Chemistry, English Literature and Physical Education.
In 2007, as part of the Glen Rock High School’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, Kari was selected Most Notable Female Scholar Athlete in the History of Glen Rock High School.
At Dartmouth College Kari continued her soccer career as the team’s goalie. In her senior year, she was named to the First Team, All-lvy and was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player in its 1991 Ivy League championship season. She was also selected to the First Academic Team, All-Ivy. Her single season and career records for highest save percentage still stood 20 years after graduation.
