Coach Bill Carbone
Glen Rock became known as a soccer town because of Bill Carbone’s hard work, leadership and success.
Bill Carbone joined the Glen Rock High School faculty as a Science teacher in September 1965 and became the Head Coach of the school’s soccer team in September 1966. During his eleven years coaching the school’s soccer team, from 1966 through 1976, he compiled an overall record of 132-37-18, a winning percentage of 75%. Three of his first four teams finished second in the NBIL; all seven of his subsequent teams finished first in the B-PSL. Five of his eleven teams won Group, Sectional Championships. His 1968 team won the Group 3, Sectional Championship and then won the Group 3, North Jersey Championship before losing in the State Final. His 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1976 teams won the Group 2, Sectional Championship. His 1968 team and his 1976 team have been inducted into the Glen Rock High School Hall of Fame.
Bill was named All-Suburban Coach of the Year by The Ridgewood Herald-News in 1968 and 1972 and Bergen County Coach of the Year by The Bergen Record in 1976. He was the N.J. Interscholastic Coaches Association State Honor Award recipient in 1981. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of both the Bergen County Soccer Coaches (1992) and the Soccer Coaches Association of New Jersey (1993).
Bill’s eleven-year tenure still stands as the most successful era for boys soccer in the school’s history.
Bill subsequently was the Assistant Coach under Ed Troy for the girls soccer team for seven years of their great success. He also coached freshman and junior varsity boys soccer, boys junior varsity baseball and boys junior varsity basketball.
Bill continued to teach Biology at Glen Rock High School until his retirement in 1995. During his 30 years teaching at Glen Rock, he also served as Chairman of the Science Department for nearly 15 years and had a significant, positive impact on the highly-rated GRHS Science Program. In 1993, he was awarded the Glen Rock Home and School Association Robert H. Ax Award that is given to a teacher who has done outstanding work over a period of years or has made other effective contributions to the excellence of Glen Rock schools.
Always one to put himself out there and lead, Bill co-founded both the Glen Rock and the Ridgewood Soccer Associations. He has also been a member of the Executive Board of the Bergen County Coaches Association and co-founded the Bergen County Boys Soccer Tournament, as well as being a fifteen-year member of the Executive Committee of the New Jersey Soccer Coaches Association (including serving as President in 1978 and Treasurer in 1979-1988). He has also served in executive and trustee positions in various other educational and civic leadership organizations, including as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Thielke Arboretum.
Bill was a high school soccer and baseball star for Irvington (N.J.) High School. He subsequently attended and graduated from Montclair State College before coming to Glen Rock High School. He later earned his master’s degree from Montclair State College.
Having overseen one of the most successful programs in the school’s history, Bill was inducted into the Glen Rock High School Hall of Fame in 2016.
