Dave Stanley was one of Glen Rock High School’s most successful track athletes. He also ran cross country and played basketball.
Dave was Group 2, State Champion in the 440 yard dash during his sophomore year and Group 3, State Champion in that same race during his senior year.
Dave’s Personal Best Time of 0:48.3 for the Quarter Mile at the Group B, Bergen County Championship equaled the then-fastest time in the history of Bergen County high school athletes.
While Dave ran on cinder tracks that were customary during the 1960s, his personal best time (when converted to 0:48.0 for today’s 400 meters) has only been bested by six Bergen County runners in the subsequent 50-plus years. Needless to say, it still stands as the fastest time in Glen Rock High School’s history.
In addition to his success as an individual Quarter Miler, Dave anchored the school’s Mile Relay and Sprint Relay teams, which set then-school record times of 3:27.6 in a First Place Finish at the Twin Boro Relays in 1963 and 3:38.5 in a First Place Finish (and then-meet record) at the Northern New Jersey Relays in 1964. He was also Co-Captain of the team during his senior year.
Dave received season-ending First Team, All County (by The Bergen Record), First Team, All Suburban (by The Ridgewood News) and First Team, All-State recognition. The singular nature of Dave’s accomplishments is evidenced by the fact that he was Glen Rock’s only individual Group State Track Champion until the 1990s.
Dave attended Dartmouth College and was Captain of the Freshman Track Team and ran for three years. several NASDAQ listed companies.
