Brian Dovey (’59)
Brian Dovey was Glen Rock High School’s first three sport star athlete. Brian received First Team, All-Suburban honors in football and basketball and set league (and school) track records in both the 100 yard dash and 220 yard dash. He also played baseball (and some golf).
The 1958 Football Team was Glen Rock’s first Varsity Football Team. Brian Dovey at quarterback and Hall of Fame Inductee Paul Stanley at halfback led the team to a 7-1 record. The team’s only loss was to an undefeated Glen Ridge team that included future NFL quarterback Gary Cuozzo and was subsequently named Group 1, Sectional Champion. Brian was the leading scorer on the team – and the leading scorer in the Northwest Bergen County (“Suburban”) Area — with 76 points. He was named to the First Team, All-North Jersey Conference, the First Team, All-Suburban (by The Ridgewood News) and the Fourth Team, All-County (by The Bergen Record). The team’s most exciting game was a 21-20 triumph over Wood Ridge as a result of Brian’s late 91-yard kickoff return.
That winter Brian led Glen Rock’s Basketball Team to its first winning record and was named to the Second Team, All-NJC and to the First Team, All-Suburban, and received Honorable Mention, All-County.
Brian could run. His time of 22.8 in the 220 yard dash was the school’s record until Hall of Fame Inductee Alan Flynn ran that race in 21.9 in 1965. Brian finished first in the 220 yard dash and finished second in both the 100 yard dash and the broad jump at the NJC Championship in the spring of 1959. During the season, Brian also anchored the team’s 440 and 880 relay teams.
Brian graduated with a Mathematics degree from Colgate and an MBA from Harvard.
