Gretchen Marquard

Gretchen Marquard (‘92)

Gretchen Marquard was one of the most dominant tennis players in the history of Glen Rock High School.

As a freshman, Gretchen Marquard immediately assumed the #1 singles position on Glen Rock’s tennis team and held that position throughout her four years at Glen Rock.

At the end of her freshman season, Gretchen was named to the First Team, All-B-PSL Carpenter Division after leading her team to a second place league finish and an overall 14-5 final record.

As a sophomore, Gretchen finished second in the Groups 1 & 2, Bergen County Individual Championship and was named to the Second Team, All-County (by The Bergen Record). The team won the B-PSL Carpenter Division Championship and had an overall 15-5 final record.

As a junior, Gretchen won the Groups 1 & 2, Bergen County Individual Championship in a dominating performance (6-1, 6-4) and then nearly defeated the Groups 3 & 4 Champion, only losing after a double set tie breaker in the third set. Her final record was 17-3 and she was named to the First Team, All-County. Her team had a successful 10-5 final record but were narrowly defeated by Midland Park for the league championship.

In her senior year, Gretchen had an even more outstanding season. At the Bergen County Championship, she repeated as Groups 1 & 2, Bergen County Individual Champion (6-0, 6-1) and then defeated the Groups 3 & 4 Individual Champion (7-5, 6-1), to capture the All Groups, Bergen County Individual Championship. Led by Gretchen’s victory, Glen Rock finished third in the Groups 1 & 2 Team Championship.

In the subsequent State Tournament, Glen Rock’s 1991 Girls Tennis Team had one of its more successful seasons, finishing as the Group 1 Sectional Runner-up.

At the end of her senior season, The Bergen Record once again named Gretchen to the First Team, All-County. Her final record that season was an outstanding 19-2.

After graduating from Glen Rock High School, Gretchen attended Providence College, where she played for the college’s tennis team and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary/special education. She is the third all-time women singles player in the history of Providence College.

In 2000, The Record selected Gretchen as one of the six singles players on its 1990-1999 All-Decade All-County Team.
