1999 Football Team

During the seven years of the Golden Age of Panther Football (1996-2002), the 1999
Football Team was the most outstanding one of those championship teams.

The 1996 football team launched seven years of incredible success at Glen Rock High School, with six B-PSL titles and six Group 1, Sectional Championships, including an incredible five seasons in a row from 1998 through 2002, all led by Hall of Fame Head Coach Alan Deaett. Of those outstanding teams, the most outstanding one was the undefeated — 12-0 –1999 Football Team.

Led by one of the most explosive offenses in New Jersey history, the team scored 579 points in its 12-game season for an average of 48.2 points per game. The team’s aggressive defense only allowed a total of 95 points or 7.9 points per game (and had four shutouts). As a result, the team achieved the biggest margin of victory in school history: 40.3 points per game.

The team won its Sectional Championship with three convincing victories, defeating Saddle Brook 35-0 in the Quarterfinals, defeating Secaucus 55-6 in the Semifinals, and defeating Cresskill 28-13 in the Sectional Championship game.

In its season ending poll, The Bergen Record named Glen Rock the Groups 1 & 2 Team of the Year.

Three members of the team — Grant Adams, Scott Stephen and Evan Tryforos — have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Quarterback Stephen accounted for 47 touchdowns, 32 on passes and 15 on option rushes. Wide receiver and defensive back Adams scored a total of 16 touchdowns, 10 on pass receptions, 4 on punt returns and 2 on interception returns. Running back Leron Ancle scored a total of 15 touchdowns, 9 on rushes, 4 on pass receptions and 2 on interception returns. Wide receiver Craig Agnello also scored a total of 14 touchdowns, 13 on pass receptions and 1 on a fumble recovery and return.

Other members of the defensive team scored an additional 5 touchdowns (John Lees 2 fumble recoveries and returns; Evan Tryforos 2 fumble recoveries and returns; and Dave Clark interception return), giving that unit an extremely impressive total of 10 touchdowns over the 12 game season.

In season ending honors, Grant Adams was named to the Second Team, Offense and Scott Stephen was named to the Third Team, Offense of the Associated Press, All-State football team.

The Bergen Record named five players to its First Team, All County: Grant, Scott and lineman Andrew Romano to its Offense Team and Leron and Evan to its Defense Team. Craig and Tom Goodwin received Honorable Mention to the Offense Team. Owen Miehe was named to its Second Team, Defense, Craig and John were named to the Third Team, Defense and Dave, Jay Lavorne, Pat Ronayne and Jay Rose received Honorable Mention, Defense.
