1976 Boys Soccer

1976 Boys’ Soccer Team

The 1976 Boys Soccer Team was recognized as the most outstanding team of Hall of Fame Coach Bill Carbone’s incredibly successful eleven year tenure as Glen Rock High School’s Head Coach.

Bill Carbone coached Glen Rock High School’s boys soccer team from 1966 through 1976. During those eleven years, his 1968, 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1976 teams won Group, Sectional Championships. The 1976 team was recognized as the most outstanding of those teams.

The 1976 Soccer Team was undefeated in regular season play and won the school’s seventh consecutive Bergen/Passaic Scholastic League title. Before the State Tournament, its only loss was in the Bergen County Tournament to the ultimate champion, Group 4 Hackensack.

In the State Tournament, the team defeated Garfield by a score of 2-1 and then defeated Tenafly by a score of 2-0 to win the Group 2, Sectional Championship. Sadly, in the Group 2, North Jersey Championship game, it suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Verona, a team that subsequently defeated Lawrence in the Group 2, Championship game.

The 1976 Boys Soccer Team finished the season with a 16-2-2 record, scoring
69 goals and only allowing 10 goals — both records at that time — and had 12 shutouts!

The team’s defense was led by sweeper Andy Donnally, who was named to the First Team, All Group, All-State. The team’s scoring was led by Doug Carter, who was named to the First Team, Group 2, New Jersey, and Eric Omsberg, who was named to the Second Team, Group 2, New Jersey. During the 1976 season, Omsberg led the team with 21 goals. Carter scored 13 goals and had 21 assists. Carter ended his career having scored 41 goals, a school record at the time.

All three players were named to the First Team, All-County by The Bergen Record.

They were joined by four other players on the All-B-PSL teams. Backfield Emil Lomauro and backfield Laurin Quiat were named to the First Team, and backfield Larry Friedman and goalie Jack Bandazian goalie were named to the Second Team. Emil also joined Andy, Doug and Eric on the First Team, All-Suburban (by The Ridgewood News) and Laurin and Jack were named to the Second Team, All Suburban.
